Room Parents |
|
Do you love to plan and organize? Do you want to be more involved in your student's classroom? Consider becoming a Room Parent!
This year in the lower school (grades K-4) we are looking for at least one Room Parent for each classroom. In the upper school (grades 5-8) we will build a team of Room Parents representing each grade.
Room Parents play a vital role in each classroom. They handle the coordination and planning of classroom events and help organize volunteers for the "behind the scenes" work to keep the classroom running smoothly.
As a Room Parent you will:
- Act as liaison between the teacher and your classroom parents to coordinate and organize classroom parties, activities and events.
- Work with the teacher to determine classroom needs and find volunteers to fulfill these needs. (ex: updating bulletin boards, organizing bookshelves, etc.)
- Act as liaison between MPA and classroom parents to help coordinate volunteers and supplies/donations for fundraising activities or events
- Assist the MPA Boosters with classroom donations for events such as Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week.
As a Room Parent you are not obligated to be present at every party or event. We want all of our MPA families to feel included in classroom activities and events. Don't hesitate to delegate and get the other classroom parents involved.
To be a Room Parent send your name, contact information and what classroom you are interested in to Kelly Fortune-Somerville - 2012-2013 Room Parent Coordinator at kfortune@kent.edu
She will then contact you with important information on how to proceed.
If several parents are interested in being Room Parent for the same classroom they can choose to share the responsibilities.

Enrichment |

Chess club: What a wonderful response to our after school chess club this past week - more than sixty students participated! Next week for pick up, students will remain in their classroom upstairs. Names will be posted outside so that parents and caregivers may sign out their child. If you are planning to carpool, please call the school indicating that your child is permitted to leave with another family. Remember that whoever picks up your child must have been given permission on your emergency form. You may update this form at anytime if needed.
Violin: Ms.Billey had her first round of violin lessons this week. It was great to have her on campus! If you have a child that has never taken lessons and you are interested in being a part of strings, contact Ms. Billey at ardis.billey@menloparkacademy.com. Ms. Billey books her lessons independently and can even provide your child with a violin. Please be aware that portions of some lessons require your child to miss class time. This schedule will change second trimester when our modulars open allowing for elective block lessons.

Safety Drill |
|
The first safety drill of the year was held on Wednesday at MPA. This drill is designed to ensure student safety in the unlikely occurrance that an intruder would be in the building. These drills are required by law and occur three times a year. Occasionally safety drills may cause anxiety in children as they consider the purpose for them. You are encouraged to have a conversation with your child about the safety drill. The greater the understanding regarding the rarity of a real incident, the better students feel.

High School?!?! |
|
If your Middle School student is starting to think about where they'd like to attend high school, now is the time to start checking out the options and requirements. While MPA cannot endorse any particular school, we feel that it is important to promote awareness for the options available to our students and their families. See the attached list for open house and testing dates for some of the local non-public schools.
