Big news for families who use ScripNow products! On May 20th, the company will be offering some of the highest rebates ever offered from some of your favorite ScripNow retailers. This is a one-day event, so make sure to mark your calendar and have PrestoPay set up on your account before then!
The "top secret" list of participating retailers will be revealed at 12:01 am on May 20th. But you don't have to wait until then to help support MPA! To help out, shop at the Scrip site, and pay with Presto Pay for additional entries to the MPA gift card raffle every time you shop! And don't forget to check their "What's New" page to see all the latest companies that support MPA with extra $$$ when you purchase their scrip cards. Congratulations to the MPA Boosters officers! At last Wednesday's meeting, officers for the 2013/2014 school year were chosen: Jessica Tonsing (President), Janie Zell (Vice-President), Pam Elliott (Secretary) and Willie Littlejohn (Treasurer).

He received a "1-Superior" rating for his alto saxophone solo, Sonatina-Divertimento #2 by W.A. Mozart. Congratulations, Kenny - can we convince you to perform an encore for us at the Extravaganza next week?

Mrs. Tigue is going to be on TV!
Some of Cleveland's finest musicians, including Menlo Park Academy's own Marysa Tigue, will play a tribute to The Rolling Stones on Cleveland's Fox 8 Morning Show on Wednesday, May 22. Fox 8 in the Morning airs at 6:30am to 9:00am, weekdays. After Fox 8 in the Morning, the band, "Jim Tigue and Friends" will headline at Night Town in Cleveland Heights to play two sets of all Rolling Stones music. The show will benefit Roots of American music-- raising funds to help inner city students achieve academic goals using traditional American music such as blues, country, bluegrass, folk, jazz and gospel. Young Authors Week Activities May 13-17, 2013
Guest Readers: Lower school teachers made special visits this week to read to the studens they will be receiving next year. This fun, reading focused time gave students an opportunity to meet their new teachers.
Guest Author: This Thursday, May 16, we will host author
Dr. John Becker. Dr. Becker has authored numerous books both non-fiction as well as fiction. Our students grades k-5 will participate in assemblies the day of his visit. He will also enlighten our 2nd graders to the mysteries of big cats and assist our 5th grade writers in a focused writer workshop.
There will be a student/author luncheon held as well, allowing budding authors to ask more focused questions. Interested students submitted questions for the author to classroom teachers. Those names were then randomly drawn by grade level to participate in the event.

Students may purchase books and have them signed by the author during this day long event. If you are interested in this opportunity, please send a check written to Dr. John Becker in a sealed envelope with your child on Thursday. Cost of his books are as follows:

Student Writing: The Embrace the World Extravaganza on May 23rd will showcase student writing done over the past weeks. There will be a display table for finished Young Author pieces for families to read. This will be a great chance for everyone to see how accomplished our Young Authors are!

Spirit Week Themes Announced

Get those wacky outfits ready - Spirit Week is coming! Here are the dress-up themes for each day; students who wish to participate can skip the usual dress code clothes as long as their outfit is "in theme" for the day!

Embrace the World Extravaganza
Thursday, May 23 from 4:00-7:30
Spring is in the air, and preparations for the first-annual MPA "Embrace the World" Extravaganza are well under way. This event will feature games, a student art show, crafts, tasty treats, music and fun for the whole family!
Bake Sale
The Boosters will be having a bake sale at the upcoming World Extravaganza event on May 23rd (4-7pm). If you are interested in donating baked goods for this event, please email boosters@menloparkacademy.com
Seeking volunteers for Thursday, May 23 from 2-8 pm at MPA.
Day-of volunteers will be helping with:
- Prize table
- Silent auction/raffle
- Serving food
- Various game and activity booths
We also need help before the event with:
- Building games
- Classroom basket assembly

EDISON CLUB
and the
EXTRAVAGANZA
Edison club will be in operation during the "Embrace the Earth Extravaganza". Please note that students will NOT be able to attend the extravaganza without parents. We hope that you will be able to attend with your child, but if not, MPA wants to ensure that students have the consistency of their after care program. You may pick your child up in the computer lab on May 23.

Car Line & Parking
at the
Extravaganza
The "Embrace the Earth Extravaganza" will begin at 4:00 on Thursday, May 23. Since much of the parking lot will be needed for activities and games there will be an adjusted carline procedure. A map and directions for that pick up will be sent seperately next week.
If you plan to attend the event right after school, we encourage you to find street parking and come into the school and pick up your child. There will be trivia games, run by Mrs. BW, in the St. Mel's Hall from 3:15-4:00 for students and parents while set up is completed.
If you are coming later in the evening for the Extravaganza, please remember that street parking will be necessary.

2013 Yearbooks go home next week
Thanks to our intrepid volunteers, the 2012-2013 MPA yearbooks will arrive next week! Yearbooks will be given directly to the students who pre-ordered them. Students will be asked to sign that they have received a yearbook.
On Wednesday, May 29th there will be an all school assembly where students will have time to sign yearbooks. PLEASE mark this date on your calendar and remind your child to bring his/her yearbook to school that day!
Didn't pre-order a yearbook? We have 14 extra books to be sold on a first come, first serve basis. The price is $15.00 a book, and checks can be made out to Menlo Park Academy. Have your child bring payment to the main office to purchase a yearbook.

MPA Book Exchange Next Week
Bring in your old books exchange them for others!
Not sure what to read next? Dive into your summer reading by trading in your well-read books for some "new" ones! Your used books will be collected Monday 5/20-Tuesday 5/21. Boxes will be located outside the gym doors. Then Wednesday 5/22-Friday 5/24 students who brought in books will be able to select the same number of books to bring home with them.
Check out the attached form explaining the event, and be sure your student(s) bring in the bottom portion during their swap times later in the week.

Free Corn Dog Lunch from the Boosters! Friday, May 24th
To acknowledge all of the students who have voiced their desire for Corn Dogs at lunch, the MPA Boosters will offer a FREE CORN DOG lunch on Friday, May 24th. Please fill out and return the attached flyer with the name of your child/children who would like to participate! Lunch will consist of a Corn Dog, Applesauce, Animal Crackers and a 100% juice box. Please note, you MUST return the flyer with your child/children's names by Monday, 5/20 to ensure your child can participate.

Field Day Volunteers Needed Thursday, May 30
Field Day t-shirts
Team t-shirts for Field Day should be delivered to students at school on the 29th. On May 30th - Field Day - students should wear their team shirt and weather-appropriate clothing and sneakers. Also, don't feel left out if you forgot to pre-order a shirt for yourself. We will have extra t shirts for sale at MPA on Field Day. The cost will be $5.00 for Youth-Adult XL, and $7.50 for extended sizes. Checks should be made out to Menlo Park Academy.

MPA Night at the Crushers Game
Sunday, June 2nd at 5pmThe MPA afternoon with the Lake Erie Crushers is quickly approaching on June 2nd @ 5:05pm! Due to overwhelming demand, the deadline for the MPA afternoon with the Crushers has been extended! If you are interested in purchasing tickets, you now have until Friday, May 24th. This is a great way to celebrate the end of the school year! MPA students will be singing the National Anthem on the field and a lucky winner will be throwing out the 1st pitch! Girl Scouts
Girl Scout Troop 70029 is now taking registrations for 2013-14 school year. Early Registration Deadline is June 9, 2013. We would WELCOME 5th Grade Juniors and 6th Grade Cadettes.
