MPA Newsletter - 9/5/2012

Stop the presses!  A Dress Down Day has been awarded to all students whose families volunteered for MPA during June, July, August, or (the first week of) September of this year!  If you’ve helped – and logged your hours – your child(ren) can come to school in non-uniform clothing this Friday, 9/7/2012.  Please be aware that according to MPA dress code, on Dress Down Days, “…students should still dress appropriately for a professional school environment. This includes pants, shorts, or skirts (including jeans) with the same length requirements [as standard dress code].  Clothing should not have words or images that condone improper or disrespectful behavior or have images that are inappropriate for school.  No open-toed shoes, flip-flops, or “Croc”-style shoes permitted.  We’ll be setting up some assistance for logging in your volunteer hours soon – in the meantime, in order to get credit for your volunteer hours, you need to either write them in the volunteer book near the sign-in desk at school, or report them online here

IMMEDIATE INFORMATION

Attention parents of current and potential Cub Scouts (boys in grades 1-5): There will be a meeting TONIGHT to discuss this year’s Cub Scout plans, meeting times, events and involvement. We’ll be meeting in the MPA gym/lunchroom tonight, 9/5/2012, at 7pm.  Hope to see you there!
-------

Hey, all present, past and future Browns volunteers!  New training dates have been released (September 5, 6, 13, and 20th) and signup sheets are waiting for you here.

We are especially looking for a few volunteers to attend the leader training TONIGHT, 9/5/2012, at 5:45 at the DNC office near the Browns stadium. A new rule this year requires a leader-trained volunteer to be in the booth and currently Chris Harrison is our (only) volunteer.  Please consider training for this so if Chris is unable to attend a game we have another volunteer or two who can be the lead.  Again, the leader training is TONIGHT!
We also need people to volunteer at the next Browns game on Sunday, 9/9/2012.  We have several slots still available, so grab some friends and sign up here.

Additionally: sign early, sign often!
Please click here to find a list of all upcoming Browns concession dates along with a sign up page.   If there are games which fit into your schedule, go ahead and sign up today.  By providing an e-mail address, you will receive a reminder before the game. Our goal is to have 16 volunteers signed up for each game.  (And if we get all the slots filled ahead of time, you won’t have to read this same blurb every week for the rest of the season!)  So grab your calendar and sign up today!
-------

We have an immediate, critical need for volunteers to help out with electives for our lower grades - if we don't get enough volunteers soon, we will have to delay the start of the electives for the younger grades this trimester!  Grades K & 1 electives are on Thursdays from 2:15-3:00; Grades 2 & 3 are held on Tuesdays from 2:15-3:00.  Please let us know if you would like to “lead” a class with assistance, rotate subjects with assistance, or just be an assistant - we've can accommodate whatever level of commitment you'd like to make!  Contact Jenn Ingraham at ji@zoominternet.net to sign up or learn more.

Thursday folders will be coming home this week with the oldest student in each family.  Returning MPA families will remember thatThursday folders are the way the school passes along information that wasn’t appropriate to include in the newsletter, including paper-only forms, fliers from outside companies, etc.  It’s also a way for parents to be sure that forms and checks sent back to school don’t get lost at the bottom of backpacks!  Be sure to review the contents of the folder, and return the folder to school the next school day.
-------

It’s time once again to play, Who Do We Know Who Can Help With This?
In past years, our parent volunteers have been able to provide a hot lunch option for our students one day a week.  This year’s hot lunch plans have been stalled because we’ve run into a tangled web of state and federal requirements – including a requirement that any menus we offer be reviewed by a nutritionist familiar with the National School Lunch Program standards.  If any of our MPA parents are (or know of) a nutritionist who might be able to help us with this project, we’d really appreciate it.  Please pass that information on to Lynn.Wilson@MenloParkAcademy.com as soon as possible, so that Pizza Day can return to MPA!
-------

Attention, parents of fifth graders: the deadline for submitting all of your Camp Fitch forms AND MEDICATIONS is Friday, 9/7/2012.   Please contact Lynn.Wilson@MenloParkAcademy.com if you have questions about what is required.
-------

All enrollment forms - including forms that accompany medications your child requires, along with the medication themselves - must be submitted to the school by Monday, 9/10/2012, or your child will not be permitted to attend MPA.  This is a state requirement and deadline, not an internal one, and we have no wiggle room here.
-------

Have you noticed a new keychain on your child’s backpack?  It may be the one given out by Mr. Kennedy and Mrs. B-W as a reminder to help prevent bullying in our school.  This was done in conjunction with the assemblies held last week, which were an introduction to character traits, a reinforcement of the new voice levels used throughout the school, and a way to share our definition of bullying and our role as allies to help stop that type of behavior.  Mrs. B-W will be sharing more information on these and other Positive Behavioral Supports (PBS) at the curriculum nights next week.  Please make a point to attend so that you can learn more from administrators and teachers what your child(ren) will be learning this year!  Curriculum nights will be held at the following times:

Tuesday, 9/11/2012            Curriculum Night for grades 4-8, 6:30-8pm
Wednesday, 9/12/2012        Curriculum Night for grades K-3, 6:30-8pm
-------

It’s tryout time!  Coach Willie Littlejohn is looking for two teams of boys for basketball this year – one for students in grades 4 and 5, and another for students in grades 6-8.  Tryouts will be held September 12, 14, 19, 21, 26 and 28th 4:30-6:00pm at the Kamm’s YMCA (down the street from the school) for all Boys 4th thru 8th grade. The more tryouts you can attend, the better chance you have at making the team. Please contact Coach Littlejohn at mpahoops@yahoo.com if you have any questions about the teams or tryouts.  Good luck!
-------

MPA’s Junior Girl Scout Troop 70029 will be meeting on the first and third Mondays of each month.  This activity for girls in 4th and 5th grades begins on Monday, 9/17/2012, with a meeting from 3:30-5:30 at MPA.  Registration forms for girl scouts will be available at the meeting; adult volunteers must also register if they plan on attending meetings or events with their children.  It costs just $12 for volunteers and $12 for girls to join for the year!  If you have any questions or would like to join for the first time, contact leader Sara George at gs.troop.mpa@gmail.com.

ONGOING INFORMATION

Please remember that for safety (and code) reasons, staff and volunteers must not prop open outside doors to the school unless they are attended by an adult at all times while open.  Thank you for your understanding and help with this matter!
-------

What’s a great way for MPA supporters to have a great time, engage in a little friendly competition, and raise money for the school?  Quiz Night, of course!  We’re beginning to plan this year’s Quiz Night, which promises to be bigger and better than ever … but to make it that way, we’re going to need lots of help.  We’re currently looking for volunteers for this event, including a co-chair, a volunteer to help with flyer design, volunteers to help with solicitation of donations for baskets and/or raffles, etc.  If you’d like to be involved, please contact Tanya.Reno@MenloParkAcademy.com .  Thanks for your help!
-------

Are you a writer, editor, graphic designer, web designer, PR or marketing person, or involved in another communications field?  The MPA Marketing and Communications Team would love to have your help!  This is a great way for parents to lend a hand with the important jobs of keeping current MPA families informed and publicizing the school to potential families.  We’re always looking for help writing press releases, making initial contact with various local news outlets when we’ve got a story to tell, and even making and editing the flyers that get sent home from other volunteer teams.  Many of our tasks can be done from home or outside of usual business hours, so you don’t have to come to the school to help us out!  If you’re interested in learning more about our team, contact team co-lead Gretchen Woods at avonhokie@yahoo.com.  Thanks for your interest – hope to hear from you soon!
-------

Please be aware that if you elected to pay your child’s materials and activity fee in installments (instead of as a lump sum in July), the monthly payments are due on the first of each month.  Please be prompt with your payments – it’s not an efficient use of our resources to have to chase down checks each month!
-------

Did you know … it’s not too late for siblings and friends of the family to apply to MPA this year?  We have a few slots open in grades 3 and 4, as well as five slots available in the grade 5-8 range.  So if you know any students in grades 3-8 for whom MPA might be a good fit, have their parents contact Nancy Colby in our admissions department(Nancy.Colby@MenloParkAcademy.com).
