Volunteers:
Your time is appreciated! Please log your volunteer hours onlineclick here

Be on the look out for information about the next Booster meeting.  There is lots of fun activities planned for this year. If you have any questions or comments for the Boosters, or would like to help plan any of the upcoming events, please email boosters@menloparkacademy.com

2) Remember, the Fall Fun Fest @ Patterson Farms in Chesterland on 10/20. The details and sign-up form are attached to this message - make sure to return the form and money by Monday, October 15, so we have an accurate count of who will be joining us.

3) The hot lunches are off to a fantastic and warm start! Please remember this coming Tuesday will be our pasta day. If you're confused about how the program works or which dates you signed up for, feel free to contact Pam Elliot (pgarner674@gmail.com) with any questions.  If you missed out on signing your child up for this service, please know that we will be offering the opportunity to do so again in early December.
Room Parents
Do you love to plan and organize? Do you want to be more involved in your student's classroom? Consider becoming a Room Parent!

This year in the lower school (grades K-4) we are looking for at least one Room Parent for each classroom. In the upper school (grades 5-8) we will build a team of Room Parents representing each grade.

Room Parents play a vital role in each classroom. They handle the coordination and planning of classroom events and help organize volunteers for the "behind the scenes" work to keep the classroom running smoothly.

As a Room Parent you will:
  • Act as liaison between the teacher and your classroom parents to coordinate and organize classroom parties, activities and events.
  • Work with the teacher to determine classroom needs and find volunteers to fulfill these needs. (ex: updating bulletin boards, organizing bookshelves, etc.)
  • Act as liaison between MPA and classroom parents to help coordinate volunteers and supplies/donations for fundraising activities or events
  • Assist the MPA Boosters with classroom donations for events such as Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week.
As a Room Parent you are not obligated to be present at every party or event. We want all of our MPA families to feel included in classroom activities and events. Don't hesitate to delegate and get the other classroom parents involved.

To be a Room Parent send your name, contact information and what classroom you are interested in to Kelly Fortune-Somerville - 2012-2013 Room Parent Coordinator at kfortune@kent.edu
She will then contact you with important information on how to proceed.

If several parents are interested in being Room Parent for the same classroom they can choose to share the responsibilities.
Enrichment
Chess club: What a wonderful response to our after school chess club this past week - more than sixty students participated!  Next week for pick up, students will remain in their classroom upstairs.  Names will be posted outside so that parents and caregivers may sign out their child.  If you are planning to carpool, please call the school indicating that your child is permitted to leave with another family.  Remember that whoever picks up your child must have been given permission on your emergency form.  You may update this form at anytime if needed.

Violin:  Ms.Billey had her first round of violin lessons this week.  It was great to have her on campus!  If you have a child that has never taken lessons and you are interested in being a part of strings, contact Ms. Billey at ardis.billey@menloparkacademy.com.  Ms. Billey books her lessons independently and can even provide your child with a violin.  Please be aware that portions of some lessons require your child to miss class time.  This schedule will change second trimester when our modulars open allowing for elective block lessons.
Sports
Girls' Basketball: On Thursday, October 4th, at 6pm there will be an information night for any families interested in girls basketball.  This will be for any girls in grades 5-8.  If you have any questions or are unable to attend the meeting, please contactKatie.Theiss@MenloParkAcademy.com .

Safety Drill
The first safety drill of the year was held on Wednesday at MPA.  This drill is designed to ensure student safety in the unlikely occurrance that an intruder would be in the building.  These drills are required by law and occur three times a year.  Occasionally safety drills may cause anxiety in children as they consider the purpose for them.  You are encouraged to have a conversation with your child about the safety drill.  The greater the understanding regarding the rarity of a real incident, the better students feel.
Boy Scouts
Is your young man interested in joining Boy Scouts?  Mr. Sweet from the Boy Scouts of America will present to students on Wednesday, October 10, during the school day, and then to parents on Thursday, October 11, at 7pm.

High School?!?!

If your Middle School student is starting to think about where they'd like to attend high school, now is the time to start checking out the options and requirements.  While MPA cannot endorse any particular school, we feel that it is important to promote awareness for the options available to our students and their families.  See the attached list for open house and testing dates for some of the local non-public schools.

Information can be submitted via email tocommunications@menloparkacademy.comfor review and inclusion in the weekly update. Submissions are subject to Director approval.
