Fall Break
Don't forget - MPA students will be off November 16th through November 25th for Fall Break.  Students should return to school Monday, November 26th, ready to begin the new trimester!
Log your volunteer hours online

Your time is appreciated! Please log your current volunteer hours online, either on the netbook near the sign-in at school, or at home.  We are not using the paper logs to record your hours anymore - all hours MUST be entered into the computer if you want credit for them!

Any hours you put in the paper log over the summer or earlier this year WILL be entered for you - you just need to enter your CURRENT hours.
Congratulations
Goes out to Mrs. Rokas, who delivered her baby this Thursday.  We wish the best of luck to you, baby John, and your whole family!

While Mrs. Rokas is enjoying her new little guy, Ms. Busser (who has worked as a teaching aide at MPA this year) will be taking over her class.  Ms. Busser has her K-3 teaching license, and she's looking forward to working with the kids in this Second Grade classroom each day.

While Ms. Busser is subbing for Mrs. Rokas, Ms. Kautz will be joining MPA as a new teaching asstant.  She is a veteran teacher from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District who is working toward her Reading Endorsement.  During her time at MPA she working with Mrs. Fredmonsky on her action research project involving readers' theatre later this year.  Welcome, Ms. Kautz!

Admissions
Thank You!
A big thank you goes out to all of the volunteers who helped out at the Open House yesterday - we introduced 51 families to the school.
Re-Enrollment of Current Students Now Open!
The re-enrollment period for current students continues through Friday, December 14th.  Re-enrollment can be done online or in person the  form is available on our website here, and payments can be submitted by check or via the website here.  The only way to guarantee your child a seat in next year's class is to have all of the enrollment information and the $100 non-refundable deposit (this will be applied to your child's activities fee upon enrollment) - turned in to the office by Friday, December 14th.

Please remember, incoming siblings who are new to the school MUST have qualifying test scores on file with MPA in order for their application to be considered complete.  Please contact Nancy.Colby@MenloParkAcademy.com in the admissions office to learn more about applications for siblings of current students.
Yes, we have winter outdoor recess

Just a couple quick reminders for parents as we enter the season of slightly chilly weather at recess:
  • Students play outside at recess unless conditions warrant the need for indoor recess.  Recess will be outdoors at 25 degrees and above.
  • Children may only stay inside during recess due to illness or injury with a doctor's note.
Please remind your children to bundle up in the cold! If they can't zip or button their jackets practicing at home can be helpful.  They can also ask an adult for help at school.  And please make sure your child is wearing weather-appropriate clothing (i.e. tights or leggings under skirts, warm pants) when they come to school.
End of the First Trimester
MPA's first trimester grading period ends Thursday, November 15th. Report cards will come home on Thursday, November 29th. Thank you for your patience this term as we worked together with our sponsor to reorganize and streamline the GradeBook interface for parents, teachers, and students.

Parents of students in K-3, please be aware that the format of your report cards will look a little different this year.  We have changed the format and standardized them so that they are more aligned with Core Curriculum standards.  K-3 is still using the non-letter-grade system, it just will look a little different.  A letter explaining the changes will acompany the cards when they come home after break.
Boy's Basketball
From Coach Willie Littlejohn:
About last Saturday's games, I was very proud of all 20 boys today. Win or lose, they all played really hard, tried their best and gave effort, which is what I told them that's all I want each game.
For the Varsity Team, the boys had a much better effort than last week and they played great in their 32-18 win over the Tigers. Seven different Varsity players scored a basket today, which shows a great team effort. The Varsity record is now 1-1, and if we get that effort next week and if it translates into a win next Saturday vs. the 2-0 Bulldogs, we can go into the Thanksgiving break tied for first place. My favorite stat from the game was that Zach Peacock (14 points), Brian Mingus (5 points) and Marshall Monnette (4 points) combined to grab 34 rebounds in the game. Way to hit the boards guys!!!!

For the Junior Varsity team, there is a bright side, despite today's 35-9 season opening loss. The team we played had 6th graders and that team has actually played together for the last 3 seasons. The other teams in the league at this level are all first year teams with players in 4th-5th grades. While we have to play the Hawks again, I believe we will turn in a better effort and will win a few games this season against the other teams...and maybe the Hawks in a re-match in a few weeks. It is also my goal to TRY and get ALL the players on the team in every game (Joey C and Gino P are now on the team, no longer mentors). Now, I believe I need to work with the JV team a little more this week to get them ready for their next game, so I would like them to come to the Wednesday and Friday practice for this week.
This week's schedule is:
Wednesday 11/14 - ALL Players Practice (JV + Varsity) 4:15-6:00
Friday 11/16 - ALL Players Practice (JV + Varsity) 4:30-6:00
Saturday 11/17 - MPA JV Game (0-1) @ 10:00am vs. JV Tigers (0-1) (Same Warrensville YMCA) - Free Admission
Saturday 11/17 - MPA Varsity Game (1-1) @ Noon vs. E Prep Bulldogs (2-0) (Same Warrensville YMCA) - Free Admission
Admission is Free to all games. GO WIZARDS!!!!!!
Winter Concert Information

Cookies and beverages will be served during the intermission of "FOUR SEASONS, an MPA Winter Concert." Please help us provide these refreshments with a cookie donation.  Bring your cookies to Magnificat High School on Friday, December 7 when you arrive for the concert.  Label your cookies if they contain nuts or if they address specific allergy concerns.  Please return the attached formto the school by Monday, December 3rd, to let us know you're bringing goodies!

Also, simplify your evening before the concert and enjoy dinner with your MPA friends.  Join us at the pasta dinner sponsored by the Boosters at Magnificat High School before the students take the stage. Dinner includes penne pasta with marinara, garlic bread,
salad and a beverage.  Reservations are required, and can be made using the attached form. Reservations and payment are due no later than Monday, December 3rd.

Here's the schedule of all the events for our concert evening, Friday, December 7th, 2012:
4:30-6:00 - Pasta Dinner
6:00-6:30 - Auction Viewing & Open Seating
6:30-8:00 - Concert

Mrs. Leib would like to let parents know the clothing requirements for the concert - NO JEANS!  Please send kids in wearing either standard school uniform clothes, or dress clothes of your choosing.  It's not a black-tie event, but it IS fun to see the kids all spiffed up.
Penny War - Help us count the coins!
We're looking for Student Council Members (and their families!) who are willing to come in on Friday, November 16, beginning at 9:30am, to help count and roll all the change from our Penny War.  Please visit this site to sign up - and we'll see you on Friday!
Looking for a few good people ...
... to help us let volunteers know they're valued throughout the year.  Mrs. B-W is looking for a few people to help her keep up with expressing our thanks to volunteers.  It's a great way to get in some volunteer hours from home or in the evenings - making phone calls, writing thank you cards, and other small tasks that make a big difference.  If you can lend a hand, please contact her at Paige.BW@MenloParkAcademy.com.
Focus on Academic Enrichment
This year we're planning to introduce parents to some of the academic enrichment opportunities our students are offered throughout the year.  This week:  Power of the Pen.

MPA's participation in this event is coordinated by Mrs. Belko.  Students in grades 6-8 learn to respond to a writing prompt within a certain amount of time.  Competition begins at the local level, with winners moving on to regional and state competitions.  In the past our students have performed very well in this competition, reaching the state-level competition.

For more information on the Power of the Pen competition, contact Mrs. Belko, or visit http://www.powerofthepen.org/ .
