Winter Concert Program Cover Art Contest
Students, grab your art supplies and start creating - we need your art for the cover of the winter concert program!  Here are the details of the contest:
  • Drawing must be in marker or pencil on a piece of 8 1/2"x11" paper, with student's name and grade on the back
  • Drawing subject should fit one of the four seasons - spring, summer, fall, or winter.
  • There will be four winners (one for each season), who will have their art featured on the concert program.  They'll also win art supplies, and their art will be auctioned off as part of the fundraiser at the auction.
  • Submissions must be received by Mrs. Padrutt by Monday, December 3rd, in order to be considered.
  • Students may submit as many entries as they wish, but each student may only win once.

In Our Thoughts...

Over the Thanksgiving break, Ms. Belko, our middle school Language Arts teacher, suffered a minor stroke.  She will be out for several weeks as she goes through rehabilitation.  Her prognosis is good and she and her family are in our thoughts.  Mr. Fowler will be subbing for Ms. Belko during this time period.

You can email Ms. Belko attammi.belko@menloparkacademy.com

New Website Design Debuts
Time to update any bookmarked MPA pages

The MPA Marketing and Communications Team is pleased to announce the launch of the new and improved design ofwww.menloparkacademy.com.  This new design includes the same information and links that were in the old site, just in a way that is more user-friendly for current and prospective parents, potential corporate donors, and the public at large.
If you have previously bookmarked any MPA pages (such as the enrollment page, or the school calendar), you'll need to update the URLs to get them to go to the new pages.  We'll be sharing more information in the coming weeks about how to get the most from the new design.  If you have any specific questions or feedback, please send them to Communications@MenloParkAcademy.com.  In the meantime, here are links to some of the pages that are most useful to current parents:

Getting Organized with Note Taking

CORNELL NOTES
In an effort to assist students in grades 4-8 with their
organizational strategies and study skills, the teachers will be
introducing the use of Cornell Notes across content areas.
Teachers have committed to teaching this format in all
classes to students during a two week period. Cornell Notes help students plan out their thinking and streamline studying.

You can view a sample of Cornell Notes here:  http://lsc.cornell.edu/Sidebars/Study_Skills_Resources/cornellsystem.pdf

Mathematics Support and Enrichment

Last year MPA adopted the Singapore Mathematics Program.  This year we will be making a focused effort to analyze it's fit for our students and to address individual student needs.  In that effort, over the next few weeks, all students will take the placement test from the previous academic year. We will then analyze the data to look for student needs and any trends of group gaps by standard. The staff will then work together to design intervention activities to address these areas. These activities will be used in math class but also during study halls and advisory periods.

In addition, staff will begin tracking individual student mastery of math strands, using the Singapore scope and sequence checklists. This data will help to drive instruction so that spiraling content that has been mastered can be skipped or given as independent review. This approach will allow for teachers to complete the entire scope and sequence for that given year, increasing the effectiveness of the Singapore Mathematics Program while meeting individual student needs.

Academic Excellence and Student Recognition Assemblies

Our first celebration of student achievement for the year will be held on Monday, December 10 at 2pm.  We will recognize academic excellence as well as numerous other skill areas.  Parents are welcome to attend.

Boy's Basketball
From Coach Willie Littlejohn:
Our last game was a great effort by the JV team, despite the 25-14 final score. They all played hard and smart, were very aggressive and despite the Tigers' "height disadvantage", I felt their performance was light years better than last week on both offense and defense.

The 2nd Annual Parents vs.Team game will be at the Westpark YMCA on Friday. December 21st at 4:45 - 6:00.
ALL GAMES FOR THE JV & VARSITY TEAMS (back to back) FOR DECEMBER ONLY WILL BE PLAYED AT THE DOWNTOWN YMCA, 2200 PROSPECT AVENUE, CLEVELAND OHIO 44115.
·         December 1st - Varsity at Noon vs. Knights, JV @ 1:00 vs. Spartans
·         December 8th - Varsity at Noon vs. Titans, JV @ 1:00 vs. Hawks
·         December 15th - Varsity at Noon vs. Sabers, JV @ 1:00 vs. Tigers
·         December 22nd - Varsity at Noon vs. Falcons, JV @ 1:00 vs. Spartans
Admission is Free to all games. GO WIZARDS!!!!!!

Homeless and Hunger Awareness Drive Results
Thanks again to all who participated in the Homeless and Hunger Awareness Drive.  Our families collected over $1,700 dollars and collected more than 1,000 food items!  Our youngest students were very motivated and swarmed the penny war jars every morning- the k-3 team brought in enough contributions to win a pajama party and movie, which will be in December.  The 1st grade class was declared winners with a total $16.42 (after all their silver & paper money was deducted).  Thanks again to the Student Council and everyone who contributed, helped count, roll & package these items. What a great & positive way to start the holiday season!

Interested in Skiing or Snowboarding?

Would you be interested in participating in a ski/snowboard club that would begin the end of January? Possible days include M-Th after school, Saturday morning, or Sunday afternoon. The sessions run for five weeks and includes a lesson each time. After the 5 weeks, the group can continue to attend on the set time as long as there is snow. Estimated costs would be $139-159 if you have your own equipment and $199-219 if you need to rent equipment, which is a group rate. This is not a school-sponsored activity so parent/chaperone involvement is needed. Depending on the number of interested participants, we will either carpool or consider a bus, which would be an additional expense. Children must be at least 8 years old by January 1, 2013 to be eligible to attend. Email Kari atkbasiewicz@yahoo.com if you're interested in learning more, and include the number of adults and students who might attend so that interest can be determined.

Information can be submitted via email to: communications@menloparkacademy.com for review and inclusion in the weekly update. Submissions are subject to Director approval.
