WordMasters Challenge
The WordMasters Challenge is a national competition for students that encourages growth in vocabulary and verbal reasoning.  Each year, nearly 250,000 students from some of the best public and private schools throughout the United States participate in the WordMasters Challenge. The contest addresses higher-level word comprehension and verbal reasoning by challenging students to complete analogies based on relationships among words.
Excellence in the competition requires both a mastery of the meanings of the vocabulary words and thoughtful reasoning about the relationships between these words and more familiar language used in the competition's analogies.
This week MPA held our third round challenge meet for the Grade 5 Blue Division Wordmasters Challenge. Two MPA students received a perfect score!
Congratulations:

Rhiannon B. and
Aria S. for their terrific work!
Recognition Corner
Elizabeth C. took first place in her piano recital on Friday, May 17.  She received 100% on her performance piece, "Ice Skating", and won a trophy. She has been playing for a year and a half.  Congratulations, Elizabeth!
2013-2014 Paperwork Due in July
New and returning MPA students for next year will need to submit registration information for the 2013-2014 school year.  The forms will be available online beginning approximately July 1st.  An email notifying families of the forms availability will be sent out.  Completed paperwork will be accepted at school on the following days:

Monday 7/22 - 9am-3pm
Tuesday 7/23 - 11:30am - 6:30pm
Wednesday 7/24 - 7am - 2:30pm

Please remember that all families - new and returning - must bring all completed forms, plus the materials fee, plus proof of residency dated in July 2013 (utility bill, mortgage or rent paperwork).  We will not be able to accept incomplete paperwork.  Please contact Mrs. Colby at MPA if you have any questions about what will be required.

Thanks for your assistance with this, and we look forward to seeing you in July!

Water, Water, and More Water
Students Stay Hydrated, Stay Healthy

water  The weather has turned summer like and staying hydrated is incredibly important.  Please send your child to school with a water bottle this week and discuss the need to drink frequently in the heat.  We recommend that you write the student's name on the bottle in permanent marker so that it doesn't end up in lost and found!

Extravaganza - Thank You

The First Annual MPA Extravaganza was a huge success despite the weather!  Thank you to all the parents & staff who jumped in to help us relocate to the indoors after a deceptively sunny late afternoon.

The student performances and art work were certainly the highlight of the evening.  We have such a talented group of young people gracing the halls of Menlo Park Academy.

A huge thanks to Mellissa Adell, development coordinator, for all of her hard work and attention to detail in putting together a new event.
